BOOST YOUR BRAIN WITH OLIVE OIL

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh showed that oleic acid a key ingredient in olive oil protects your brain from tumors.
Oleic acid may ultimately protect the growth and spread of cancer.
I have been recommending your using Extra Virgin Olive Oil in your diet for decades. Try it instead of butter, on salads, on popcorn etc. It takes a while to get used to the flavor, but once you do, you will be hooked. Our grandchildren love it, for dipping their bread in it. It is an acquired taste, but all Italian eateries consider it essential.

PRESCRIPTION MISTAKES YOU MAY BE MAKING

Medical errors have doubled between 2000 and 2012.
1. Heart drugs are the biggest problems. Beta blockers and Calcium Channel Blockers cause 20.6% of the mistakes.
2. Pain drugs and acetaminophen (Tylenol) are involved in 12% of the mistakes.
3. Insulin Make sure you take the long acting one in the morning,
The short acting one should be taken at night.
4, Taking multiple drugs at a time can be problematic. Check with your pharmacist about all the drugs you are taking to see if there are any contraindications or toxicities. Many people receive prescriptions from more than one physician. Tell your pharmacist about any over the counter drugs you are taking also.
Be careful of drinking or eating grapefruit when you take certain drugs.
Ask your pharmacist if they can dispense your medications in a punch out bubble pack, to prevent your taking more doses than you were prescribed.
As a pharmacist, I can tell you that most of these problems can be prevented.

AIR POLLUTION AND ALZHEIMER’S CONNECTION

A study done by David Allsop as told to the British Broadcasting Corporation, concluded that breathing air polluted by traffic fumes may be harmful not only to your heart, lungs and brain. Millions of tiny particles of magnetite, an iron oxide, where found in the brain tissue of people who lived in busy cities. In high concentrations, they have been linked to Alzheimer’s and other neuro-degenerative diseases. The World Health Organization has warned that air pollution causes up to 1 million premature deaths each year.

HOW SWEET IT ISN’T

A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal showed that artificial sweetener can actually cause weight gain and other health-related problems.
People who consume the most artificial sweeteners may also eat more processed food, which can lead to obesity or heart disease.
Artificial sweeteners can interfere with your gut bacteria which are crucial for the absorption of nutrients.
Regular eating or drinking sugar substitutes can cause people to crave sweeter foods more often.
If you must sweeten your food or drinks, try using Stevia, a natural sweetener. Make sure it is pure Stevia, not the processed type.

WHY YOU SHOULD BE EATING WHOLE GRAINS, INSTEAD OF WHITE BREAD.

Researchers followed 81 men and women aged 40 to 65 for six weeks to see if eating whole grain bread, cereals, pasta, crackers and other food was healthier.
They found the following:
1. People lost 92 calories a day because they burned more calories at rest and excreted more calories in their stools.
2. They had higher stool weights and frequency
3. Had lower levels of gut bacterium that can be linked to inflammation.
When you are buying breads, cereals, pasta and crackers make sure the first ingredient is “Whole Grains”. They will try to fool you by saying Whole Wheat, which is not the same thing.
