STAND UP TO WEIGHT LOSS

Scientists at Mayo Clinic analyzed 46 studies involving more than 1000 people and found that six hours of standing burns an extra 54 calories per day. In a year that could amount to a loss of 5.5 pounds. Those who continued for 3 years, lost 22 pounds.
My advise is if you sit 12 hours a day, by cutting this in half and standing for six hours, you can lose a significant amount of weight, without changing your eating habits.

WALNUTS: THE NEW SUPER FOOD

Shelled, all natural walnuts have a rich, delicious distinctive flavor. They are a source of dietary fats (good fats), protein, vitamins and minerals. 1 ounce or a dietary serving contains about 7 whole walnuts.
A 1 oz serving provides 4.32 grams of protein.
Walnuts are a good source of alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid that reduces inflammation and the risk of degenerative diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
Walnuts are a good source of the B-vitamin, folate which is essential for the synthesis of red blood cells and DNA and helps prevent anemia.
Walnuts are a good source of vitamin B6, which is necessary for carbohydrate protein and fat metabolism. They also provide niacin, riboflavin and thiamine.
Minerals such as zinc. essential for wound healing, sense of smell, immune system and the function of many enzymes, are also found in whole walnuts.
Magnesium is also provided in whole, shelled walnuts.
There is a lot of research going on now about this new Super Food!
I especially love the Primavera brand of California walnuts because they are shipped fresh from the source. Try them as a snack food for your family, instead of the high fat, sugary and salty processed junk foods.

ITS FLU SEASON, BE CAREFUL OF USING ANTIBIOTICS UNLESS YOU NEED THEM.

The most important thing is to ask your physician if you really need an antibiotic. You see antibiotics treat bacterial infections, such a strept throat and sinusitis. They do nothing for viruses, which are the causes of colds and flus.
If you are prescribed an antibiotic here are some hints to support your body while taking them:
1. Make sure you take the complete prescription. A lot of people take a few days of the drug, feel better, then stop.
They think they can use the remaining capsules or tablets for the “Next Time”. This is a major mistake. The infection will come back in a short period of time and the bacteria can mutate so that it becomes resistant to the original antibiotic.
2. Ask the pharmacist if you should take the antibiotic with or on an empty stomach. Also is alcohol a problem when taking this antibiotic.
3. Reintroduce the good bacteria, called probiotics into your body, when taking an antibiotic regimen. Acidophilus and bifidus are examples of the friendly bacteria, that should be replaced when taking antibiotics. Otherwise digestive problems, such as gas, diarrhea, bloating and constipation can occur. Avoid starchy and sugary foods while on antibiotics, because they are harder to digest. If you are nauseated try ginger tea made from fresh ginger root.
Supplement such as Vitamins A and C and fish oil seem to increase the resistance of mucus membranes to bacterial infection.
4. Be careful of yeast overgrowth, which can cause vaginal yeast infections and stomach upset.Eating garlic, onions as well as drinking green-tea will keep the yeast in check.
(A breath freshener would be a good idea as well)
5. To prevent the problem of colds and flus in the first place, eat a balanced diet, rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and good sources of protein, such as chicken, beans, soy, wild salmon, halibut and nuts. Mushrooms such as shitake and maitake are powerful immune boosters. Taking extra Vitamin C and zinc in a lozenge or nasal spray also strengthens your immune system.
6. After using up all the antibiotics, to support your liver, take a milk thistle supplement (70% Silymarin) 140 mg, up to 3 times daily, as a liver cleanser.
See my books “New Vitamin Bible” and “New Herb Bible” for more information.
PS Check the humidity in your home, especially if you turn on the heat, which dries out the air. Believe it or not, cold weather has nothing to do with “Catching a cold”. In fact the common cold was unknown among the Eskimos, until the white man entered their world.

SUPER FRUITS YOU HAVEN’T HEARD ABOUT YET!!

These “new” super fruits are high in fiber and rich in antioxidant, therefore they make a better snack than most.

Here are some “New” ones:
1. PITAYA A supersweet fruit high in fiber and rich in antioxidants, which can help prevent cancer and heart disease.. FROM LATIN AMERICA
2. BAOBAB FRUIT Is high in Vitamin C and Omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for brain and eye health

FROM SOUTH AMEICA
4. MONK FRUIT Is a low calorie substitute for sugar
FROM CHINA
5. LINGONBERRY Has phytochemicals such as arbutus and anthocyanin that can help fight urinary tract infections.
FROM SCANDANAVIA
6. GAC FRUIT Contains 70 times more lycopene, a heart healthy antioxidant, than tomatoes.

The average person reading this blog gets 2 servings (an apple is a serving) of fruit per day. I feel we need 5 servings of fresh fruits and veggies (10) total per day. In fact even the new regulations “The Plate” says that one-half of your plate should be veggies. Keep fresh cut veggies and fresh fruit in the refrigerator at eye level, so that it is the first thing you and your family sees, when they open the refrigerator.
Keep a bowl of fresh fruit on the coffee table next to your sofa, so that you can see them while watching TV.
If you are a parent, remember children emulate what you eat. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

CRUSH YOUR CRAVINGS WITH THESE FOODS.

Do you become a craving crazy. Well, it is not your fault. Actually your hormones cause you to crave food. When your stomach empties a hormone called ghrelin is produced which causes you to be hungry. The secret is to stay full, don’t let the “gremlins” attack.
Here are some foods that fight the hunger feeling:
1. Apples: Yes an apple a day helps balance your blood sugar. When your blood sugar drops at 10 am, 2,4,8 and 10 pm you crave a snack. Apples are good source of pectin, a fiber, that gives you a sense of being full, for 1 to 2 hours.
Try eating an apple before each meal with a full glass of clean water. This will cause you to eat a lot less.
2. Fiber Bran: either wheat or rice will do the trick
Dissolve 1 to 2 tablespoonfuls of fiber in a large glass of water. This will fill up your stomach. At breakfast it the best time to drink this, or after dinner or before bed.
Fiber also helps you become regular with your bowel movements. Adults only get 50% of the fiber they need in their diets. No wonder constipation is so common.
3. Green Tea: It contains a plant nutrient called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) which increases the hormone CCK
(Cholecystokinin) which is responsible for creating the feeling of being full (satiation). EGCG also stimulates your cells to burn energy, including fat.
4. Red Wine Vinegar: When you ferment red wine long enough it becomes red wine vinegar, It is a healthy appetite suppressing addition to any meal. Red wine vinegar also contains Resveratrol that has been determined to protect your heart.
You can add 2 tablespoonfuls mixed with sparkling water or use it as a salad dressing, or just garnish your food with it.
5. Walnuts: Are a great source of omega-6 fatty acids. Walnuts have been shown to increase the release of satiety hormones.
The fullness lasts about 30 minutes. They are a great snack on the go.
The real secret of weight loss is to stay full by eating foods that have a lot of fiber, so that you don’t have the cravings “munchies.”

ITS ALLERGY SEASON. HOW CAN YOU TELL IF IT IS A COLD OR AN ALLERGY?

In my book, What You Must Know About Allergy Relief, I give my readers the difference between colds and allergies.
Actually time will tell if it is a cold or allergy. Although both begin with an itchy, runny nose and even a scratchy throat, they don’t end up the same way. Here are some tips to tell them apart:
1. Check you tissues! Allergy secretions are thin and clear.
Cold secretions are thicker and may change color to green or yellow.
2. Colds lasts 7 to 10 days. Allergies can go on indefinitely.
3. Low grade fever is a cold symptom.
4. If you seem to develop a cold during the same time each year, it could be a sign of a seasonal allergy.
5. If you have a seasonal allergy, your symptoms will get worse outdoors.
6. Even if it’s not hay fever season, you could still be having an allergic reaction to an indoor allergen, such as dust, mold, or a pet.
If you get a diagnosis as an allergy, buy a good air purifier and keep it on in your bedroom all the time. This purifies the air from dust, pollen and molds.

HOW TO REDUCE HEART FAILURE BY HALF

A study presented at the Congress of Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology entitled “The effect of Coenzyme Q10 on morbidity in chronic heart failure”, showed that the nutrient CoQ10 can reduce mortality rates by half in patients with moderate to severe heart failure.
This was a long-term double blind placebo-controlled study split 420 European and Asian patients between 100mg of CoQ10 three times daily (202 people) and placebo (218). After two years 18 patients died in the CoQ10 group (9%), compared to 36 (17%) in the study group.
CoQ10 is concentrated in the mitochondria-the power plants of the cells–and plays a vital role in the production of chemical energy by participating in the production of ATP, the body’s “energy currency.”
