A new study published in Stroke, a Journal of the American Heart Association, examined 2,888 people all more than 45 years old and 1,484 people more than 60 years old all from Framingham, Massachusetts. A 10 year period from 1991 to 2001 was studied. Researchers documented stroke and dementia occurring over those 10 years, taking into account the number of both sugar-laden drinks and artificially-sweetened soft drinks.
Drinking artificially sweetened soft drinks each day led to an approximately three times higher risk of having a stroke or developing dementia, respectively.
My advise is to decrease or better yet, stop your intake of artificially sweetened drinks. To wean yourself off of Diet Sodas, try drinking clean water or carbonated water (flavored or plain) by adding some fruit, or mixing in a little fruit juice for flavor. Delicious, little calories and healthy!
