What You Should Know About Turmeric (Active Ingredient Curcumin)

The Turmeric plant has been used as a traditional remedy for 4000 years. Turmeric root contains polyphenols, which are known to reduce inflammation and is a natural remedy for such conditions as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and eye inflammation. Recently new research showed it’s effectiveness in the prevention of Alzheimer”s disease.

You can eat turmeric like a vegetable. Just slice turmeric into a salad or stir fry it into your favorite vegetable dish. It can be added to soups, as well.

It is interesting that the longest living people on earth, the Okinawans, drink turmeric teas as their favorite tea. The Okinawans (Southern most island in Japan), have a very low incidence of the diseases associated with aging, such as Alzheimer”s, arthritis and heart disease.

It is a spice that is a common ingredient in curry powder, used extensively in India, due to it antibacterial properties. It is believed to have been used to preserve food before the widespread use of refrigeration.
